An MSBA nominee for Apr 21, Anna rated it really liked it Shelves: I thought this book filled a previously empty niche of introducing kids to the moonlanding, which made it so fascinating. The suggested reading at the end pointing kids towards more period resources is a bonus. One of my favorite parts was the actions of Mamie's father and how the problem was resolved without the author resorting to divorce.termeckpoleco.ml/2968-postales-de.php

And then they calmly found a way to resolve their problems and stay true to their marriage vows. The friendship between Mamie and Buster was one of the main driving forces of the book. Jul 27, Kris rated it it was amazing Shelves: I am also fascinated my the moon landing.
The premise drew me right in. This is a great read. Mamie is a strong female character. I love the friendship she has with Buster and his enjoyment of Tang. I heartily enjoyed this quick read featuring a girl writing letters to Michael Collins, the third astronaut to travel with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the moon on Apollo While she writes him letters detailing the events leading up to the rocket launch, and then the eventual moonwalk, she is also describing what happens to a family when the parents leave a young girl alone for the first time.
Her mother leaves home, and two days later, her father goes after her.

They both assume that Mamie's older sisters will step in to help her out, but no one does. So, with the help of her best friend and neighbor Buster, Mamie decides that she can pull off a Moonwalk Party all on her own. This was a fun read showcasing this moment in history. I liked the main characters, but got very disappointed in the adults in the book. Highly recommend for students in grades Dec 04, Jamie rated it really liked it Shelves: The letter formate was slightly annoying and kind of weird, but I like the historical setting and what happens to Mamie Nov 24, Kelly rated it it was amazing.
I loved this book! My 10 year old daughter found this at her school library and also loved it. Jul 10, Angela rated it really liked it. I loved this book geared for very young readers. Very engaging, Mamie is a very smart little girl who proves to herself and her family, how resourceful she can be and that there is a difference between being lonely and being alone.
Oct 05, Darby Karchut rated it it was amazing. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. This is one of the Florida Sunshine State books. The young narrator chronicles her life during the week that the astronauts are on their way to the moon and back, through letters written to Michael Collins. The plot is fairly simple, but she does great job of character development for herself and her best friend, Buster.
It is very funny - I laughed out loud several times. She also comments on society and how crazy some 'normal' things are. Her observations are quite enlightening Excellent book! Her observations are quite enlightening. Here is one of my favorites: When you were my age, Michael Collins, was being considered a tattletale just about the worst thing a person could be? Because sometimes it seems like that's the way it is now. Whether it's at home with parents "Don't tell on your sister - no one likes a tattletale" or at school with teachers same thing, but replacing "sister" with "classmate" , the message is clear: I'm not sure why that is, why it is worse to tell the truth about the wrong thing someone is doing than the wrong thing is itself, but that is the world I live in.
People act like "Don't be a tattletale" is as strict a rule as any of the Ten Commandments - stricter even! Between you and me, I do not see "Thou shalt not be a tattletale" on any tablets, yet there you have it. She is very perceptive, and there are many more of these observations throughout the book, which made it a joy to read. Jul 04, LeeAnn rated it liked it Shelves: Ah, letter writing, the social media of Mamie's day and one that didn't involve sharing the pouring out of your guts with the world. Unless, of course you are a character in a book. Yet I don't think it was Mamie sharing her day to day life--including family dysfunction--in this way was what threw me out of the story several times.
We all need a way to vent on occasion and pouring out our confused emotions to a stranger, one we will never meet, can seem much "safer" than doing so with s 3 stars. We all need a way to vent on occasion and pouring out our confused emotions to a stranger, one we will never meet, can seem much "safer" than doing so with someone we know. Rather, it was the "As you know, Bob--or in this case, Michael Collins" style of storytelling the letter device made unavoidable when it came to providing the necessary background information.
I'm hoping readers who didn't live through those historic events won't find it so distracting because the overall story is good. And besides, I have a soft spot myself for Michael Collins. Nov 10, Renee rated it liked it. The goal of having an novel written in the form of letters didn't really work for this book. The letters ended up turning into a novel and written in a way that didn't seem genuine from this 10 year old character.
I enjoyed learning about who Michael Collins was. May 16, Cherry rated it liked it. Cute book for elementary kids. Oct 02, Justine Ridder rated it liked it Shelves: It's and Apollo 11 is about to take off. Mamie first started writing to Michael Collins one of the astronauts because of a class assignment, but she feels a need to continue to write to him. Mamie's mother leaves the family, and her father rushes after her leaving her 16 year old sister in charge.
At one point, Mamie is left home alone for almost 48 hours. Mamie's best friend, Buster, lives next door and keeps Mamie company. They both love learning about new things and keeping 3.
They both love learning about new things and keeping up to date on what is happening with Apollo I would have given this book 4 stars, but the ending was unrealistic in my eyes. Mamie's mother has been unhappy for as long as Mamie has remembered. Her mother dropped out of college when she was pregnant with her older sister.
I thought it was horrible for her father to leave her all alone. In the end, her parents both arrive back home after being gone for almost a week acting all happy like nothing happened. Mamie forgives them instantly. Even though she didn't receive one phone call from them during this week, she believes they simply called whenever she wasn't home. I feel like this book could send the wrong message to kids out there whose parents have left them or parents who are thinking about a divorce. Michael Collins sends Mamie a letter back 6 months after her last letter is sent.

I had torn feelings about this. Mamie sent Michael Collins dozens of letters. What are the chances that he would actually respond? Not much if you ask me, and if he would have responded, I would have hoped for a better message than the one he left. The letters themselves bothered me because they were so detailed.
What little kid writes letters with in-text citations? I wish the chapters would have been laid out the same and maybe the letter to Michael Collins could have been at the end simplified. Also, what 10 year old can make chicken from scratch?! Her mother never showed her how to bake chicken, but somehow she figured out how to put raw chicken in the pan with cream of mushroom soup, put it in the oven and cooked perfectly.
I loved the historical fiction time period. I think a lot of kids have never really thought about how huge it was for man to step foot on the moon. This book does an amazing job at explaining the importance of this event in My biggest issue with the book was the ending. But what choice did I have? The grown-ups weren't acting like grown-ups-if you ask me, they were both acting like crazy little kids-and someone had to make sure things went on happening like they're supposed to around here. After tonight, there will still be bad things going on all over the world.
There will still be Vietnam. There will still be the race riots. There will still be all kinds of bad things. Even in my own house. But you and the other astronauts, tonight you give us hope that miracles can happen and things can get better and we can all come together to want the same good thing. Jul 30, Barbara rated it liked it Shelves: This one is a 3. For those who think that teachers and their assignments have little impact outside of the classroom on their students, this book provides ready evidence to the contrary. After her teacher assigns the class to write to their favorite astronaut, ten-year-old Mamie decides to write to Michael Collins while the boys write to Buzz Aldrin and the girls write to Neil Armstrong.
For reasons that will become evident over the course of the book, Mamie feels a strong connection to This one is a 3. For reasons that will become evident over the course of the book, Mamie feels a strong connection to Collins who will remain with the space ship while the other two men will walk on the moon. Although she receives no reply to her initial letter and even after school ends for the year, she continues to write to the astronaut, pouring out her heart and revealing the troubles that plague her family as her parents fight and separate.

It's a good thing that Mamie has a bet friend, her next door neighbor, Buster, with whom she spends her free time. Michael has released a brand new single, and a new music video. The song has a great old school soul vibe, and was co-written by Charlie Puth. Have a listen, and let us know what you think!
