Often with novels and sometimes with films, one of my main gripes is that the work under discussion is too long. Roberta Taylor's first novel, however, suffers.

Ivy Brown, typist at the Wiseman Pulverizer Company, is about to turn thirty. As she sits, staring at the back of the typist in front of her and trying to avoid thinking about her impending birthday, two things lift her from her gloom: Arthur is the man on whom Ivy has pinned all her hopes.
But when Ivy discovers that Arthur is a man who has many secrets, her determination to uncover the truth comes to spell disaster for all those in her way. This product has no reviews. Let others know what do you think and be the first to write a review.

The descriptive writing is excellent but there are so many characters and all with such ordinary, forgettable names — I had to keep trawling back through the chapters to remind myself who was who.
It picks up halfway through, when the plot starts to emerge and you start registering clues and putting two and two together. The story is engaging enough; a depressing kitchen sink drama watched across two decades; I came close to abandoning this confusing novel several times before I reached the end.
The Reinvention of Ivy Brown
The story is engaging enough; a depressing kitchen sink drama watched across two decades; a truly evil bitch who never, alas, gets her comeuppance and a host of others who suffer because of simple mistakes made years ago. The main fault I found with this novel is that the character around which the whole story ultimately pivots is so sketchily drawn. None of the characters truly came alive for me, but that one in particular was nothing more than a chalk drawing with pretty eyes. And then it stops. Precipitously, unexpectedly, the whole thing grinds to a premature halt.
It all feels very underwritten, there's just not enough character or plot development, not enough meat on the bones. The writing is good, the story is good but in the end, it fails to satisfy.

Feb 18, Lee rated it did not like it Shelves: Such a waste of the time period it was set in Jul 17, Amanda Olthof rated it did not like it. Apr 29, Bex E rated it it was ok. Am I the only one who got to the end thinking "What the hell was that all about? Very confusing, and the obscure plot if you can call it that didn't seem to have much to do with the title. Oct 20, Laura Rittenhouse rated it liked it. This book bounces between 3 different women all obsessed with the same young man.
One is a sister with a special love for him, one is a young girl falling in love for the first time and one is an older woman who loves him beyond all sense of proportion. The latter is Ivy Brown. The title is a bizarre choice as Ivy is only one of the 3 women impacted by this man and she probably reinvents herself less than the others, but I suppose the title isn't all that important.
I did find myself caring about This book bounces between 3 different women all obsessed with the same young man.
I did find myself caring about these women - all slightly damaged - and worrying about their obsession for a many who, beyond his lovely eyes, doesn't seem to warrant their devotion. The ending is hinted at in the opening scene and flashes between time lines covering decades did take away from the suspense for me. In the end I felt that this is a readable story set in post war England and worth sacrificing a couple of evenings to finish.
This book is bizarre! I wouldn't go so far as to say it is unenjoyable, but it is just a strange and pointless story. There was only one character who I marginally cared about, and all the others I actively disliked. It was a convoluted, unbelievable plot which I became less and less invested in and more confused by as I read on.
The most frustrating thing about it for me has to be how unrelated it was to the impression the blurb on my edition made it out to be!

- Ehemann für eine Nacht? (Baccara) (German Edition).
- Intercepted: The Rise and Fall of NFL Cornerback Darryl Henley!

If the blurb had been accurate, I This book is bizarre! If the blurb had been accurate, I don't think I'd have ever read this book. It's an OK read. It's very short - I read it in 24 hours - so there wasn't really enough of it for me to start to hate it, which is probably the best thing about it. Not awful, but of all the books in the world, I wouldn't pick this one. This was an ok read - I much preferred 'Too Many Mothers'. It is February , and London is suffering the coldest winter anyone can remember. Ivy Brown, typist at the Wiseman Pulverizer Company, is about to turn thirty. Book bounces between 3 women obsessed with the same man - not an issue in itself, but then some additional hops into the future in random places through out the book which adds nothing - other than confusion and disjointedness.
And the title of the book is ridiculous - spoiler alert - there is no reinvention of ivy brown. She's a twisted shit as a child and an adult. Pretty much every other character in the book goes through or has been through a reinvention - everyone EXCEPT ivy brown. Oct 09, Tamara Gallagher rated it it was ok.
