Sheet Music Review 20th March is embedded in my memory as the evening on which I attended one of the most magical classical piano recitals! But that opening chord was sufficient to announce to the pianophile audience that we were about to be served a very special musical treat: Note however that no fingering is given throughout this score.

While it is the least of concerns, blemishes are stupendously rare in this live concert. His technique is not divorced from poetry - far from it. As another reviewer commented, Sokolov knows what he wants to say and stupendously says it. He is thoroughly attuned to Schubert the Ever-Wanderer with no family or abode. This is easily the best D I have ever heard. Schumann steadfastly maintained that it was Schubert's greatest sonata. I am almost persuaded so by this performance.
Every bar pulsates with life and purpose and does so in light of the overarching structure. Then there is the tempi: I always judge D s by the self-contained episode in the finale some three minutes in when Schubert muses wistfully on the passing spectacle of material things. Sokolov is equal to the challenge: How did Schubert ever find the courage to write such things? O songs of joy!

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits, and Are melted into air, into thin air: And like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd tow'rs, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on; and our little life Is rounded with a sleep.
And yet in this mighty work, Schubert affirms life and memory over the nothingness.

My lodestar in D is Kempff's performance from January where he eviscerates Time itself. There's nothing like it in discography and it is the best thing Kempff ever did. Solokov runs him damn close: The Russian is preferable in the Scherzo where his German counterpart is too portly. The recording is lifelike. Good night Maurizio and don't bother me again. This is like Richter's Cliburn score: The may be the greatest sonata and it is certainly the most difficult and this performance is just it. There are no comparisons.

I love Maria Yudina's , and there are others there but the G major is without a reasonable comparator. See all 3 reviews. There's a problem loading this menu right now. Get fast, free shipping with Amazon Prime. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations.
