I'm sure it was ground breaking when the 1st edition came out, but we're up to at least the 10th edition now A must-read for any new skydiver. One of the quotes in this book is "the difference between fear and respect is knowledge. So I've done a lot of research, thumbed through a lot of books and paid very close attention at the dropzone where I'm training.
This book, unlike anything else I've seen, organizes the principles of skydiving and the descriptions of various seemingly every possible relevant point into a very easy-to-follow format. I'm about halfway through it now and the more I read, the more comfortable I am with everything.
Poynter and Turoff seem to simply be reinforcing everything I've learned from my actual instructors both AFF and tandem. To the point, if you're considering skydiving, if you're new to the sport, if you're an instructor looking for resources to pass along to uneasy students, this is it Good for the enthusiastic beginner. Some useful material in here to reinforce, but nothing beats experience. That has more technical details on canopy flight and will help you become a better canopy pilot and understand the dynamics of how your parachute works.
One person found this helpful. I found this skydiving book to be an excellent choice for those seeking more knowledge in the world of skydiving.http://www.cantinesanpancrazio.it/components/hezahox/1192-iphone-non.php

I found a lot of information that I will keep coming back to reading about when I feel it is time for a refresher in all aspects of skydiving. I was also in the market for my first parachute rig and needed to find out more on where to go for my first rig, I found that the book was limited in this type of information.
But, in the back of the book there are references which gave me contacts on where to go, this made it worth while. I definetly would recommend it to those seeking more information dealing with the sport of skydiving. I now take the book with me to work so I can tap into answers on questions that I have about the sport when ever they pop up. For the price of this book you can not go wrong.
It just about covers everything about the sport of sky diving. Just getting into skydiving, this book is a great read. It will inform you about a lot about the sport, the equipment past and present , the training and beyond. Being on it's 10th edition, you can see where some of the newer stuff was put in and the flow of the book becomes slightly contorted from time to time, but the information is there and most of it is very useful to a new or not-yet-skydiving person.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering or just beginning to skydive. I have previous Military free fall parachuting training. I liked the step by step instruction when it comes to packing, because my previous training was to bury or "cache" your chute, or it was re-packed by a qualified military packer-riggers.
I only wish this book showed more free fall maneuvers.
