I stand by one of my updates that I would love to see a "Page-a-day" calendar of wisdom from this book to keep on my desk and remind me of some of the traits I want to emulate. Mar 20, Em rated it liked it Recommended to Em by: I am not quite sure how I feel about the woman who was brutally raped and then served her family dinner.
I don't know what's harder: I think to acknowledge it in some sort of way and move forward makes the situation and person more healthy than to not do anything.
Overall, a good book that can help people develop good character. Apr 30, Tammy rated it really liked it Shelves: A lot of good traits to consider developing though. Jul 03, Peter Galamaga rated it it was ok. Mildly interesting with some useful information. A few good anecdotes. Covey's 7 Habits is the book you want to read. Mar 28, Abhinav Sharma rated it liked it Shelves: A good book, but I find that it can be summed up in 4 short sentences;D Maslow.

I'm passing this around at work now so my whole team can benefit! Apr 23, Cheryle rated it liked it. I enjoyed the stories and I would have given the book four stars - but then I read the story of the woman who was brutally raped in her home by an intruder, and then, that very evening, prepared and served a wonderful dinner for her large family.

That's not, in my opinion, a trait I wish to emulate, however, the other people he studied and wrote about were quite admirable. The list transforms this book in a very cute self-help volume; topped with an allegory to Meryl Streep; a person that according to the author; is the compound of all the 19 qualities. Dec 19, Lyn rated it it was ok Shelves: To be honest, I skimmed this book because I found it repetitive and lacking in detached analysis. It's more of an opinion piece of the author on how he thinks these people he brings up are admirable. I think the approach of the book of presenting people he knows and believe to be admirable did not work well as it clouded the book too much with his bias on the subject.
Jun 15, Alicia rated it really liked it. I liked this book because the topics that make up each chapter were quite relevant to me. They were based on Maslow's list, but not the hierarchy any psychology student could provide in detail about our basic human needs. Maslow made a list of characteristics that we should develop to develop the best version of ourselves. I had never heard of it before, but it was an insightful list of characteristcs. 19 Traits of the Most Admirable, Creative, and Joyous People
It will stay on my bookshelf for future reference. As a disclaimer, Van de Mark states that he is not a psychologist and the book is not meant to be a research paper nor a psychological tome. As there are nineteen traits to explore, the book comprises nineteen chapters each with a story about someone who embodies one or moe specific traits. For example, if we refer to Chapter Four, we read about Andrew Weil, the alternative-medicine pioneer. However, all of these experiences taught him how to be problem focused, taking responsibility, analyzing data, gathering more data if necessary, testing your convictions, acting with more confidence that you may feel, and recognizing that inaction is often riskier than action.
The chapter goes onto illustrate how all of these elements come together and are related to Maslow's nineteen principles. The information provided in this book is timeless, presented clearly and without frills, as it peels away common traits of individuals that are not only great but also good.
They can't help but rub off on you! According to the back cover of the book, Donald Van de Mark spent more than twenty years interviewing the most successful people of our age. No More Telling as Teaching: Review The Good Among the Great posits that there is more to life than finding success in your career or racking up a myriad of achievements. That the shared traits of successful, happy and caring people were the subject matter of the book made it a must-read for me. Chapter by chapter, he introduces us to a particular trait and one or more individuals who embody it. This approach makes it very easy for the reader to indulge in some serious self-scrutiny. Until Van de Mark gives us a sequel, I will be referring back to this book regularly. One person found this helpful. This book is a fascinating read about the habits of successful and happy people. As I raced through the chapters, I realized that I was thinking throughout about my own traits: I immediately lent this book to one of my something sons.
I am eager to hear his take on it and to pass it along to my other children. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. I love that Donald has enlightened me to look for these wonderful traits in others - and has also inspired me to emulate these qualities in myself more often. After all - we notice in others what is in ourselves! I would highly recommend to others who are looking for that positive view of our society. Having met Donald Van de Mark once personally, I can see how he brings his suggestions to fruition in his own life successes.
Good advice and good reading. Book review by Richard L. I have read many self-help books, many motivational books, and many books of support and encouragement. I have even written a number of them myself, and my college textbooks on communication, in a sophisticated way, are like self-help, motivational books that offer students support and encouragement. Van de Mark's book is all of these in one. Throughout my professional career, too, I have depended upon the work of Abraham Maslow, and Maslow's hierarchy of needs appears in many of my textbooks. I have never read Maslow's nineteen specific personality traits that make people exceptional.
It is these traits that provide the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings for Van de Mark's book.
