In , Roberts sold his remaining interest to them. Instead, it was a savvy and controlled negotiation leading to a well-managed handover. Kiley and Slater had built Dryden into a thriving business, increasing staff from nine to more than 70, for instance. In fact, we accomplished due diligence in four days instead of at least six weeks. Preparing to part ways with the business and staff was inevitably emotional, especially as many employees had been with the company for at least 10 years. Kiley and Slater were as transparent as possible, sharing with staff the fact that the business would be sold as soon as they had engaged with Bahlmann.
After a handover year as semi-employees at Energy Partners, Kiley semigrated to Knysna where she is currently launching a completely different new business — collaborating with a young designer on the Roze Collection, a fashion label for plus-size women with sales run online.
Kiley believes selling Dryden enabled them both to move on completely and she is delighted with her opportunity to reinvent herself. I am having the time of my life and selling up made this possible. Chanelle Segerius-Bruce of www. In fact, I believe face-to-face meetings are almost outdated with Skype and Zoom being so successful in bringing teams together.
When she lost her house last year in the big fires, she was able to save her laptop and backup drive and therefore save her livelihood even though her entire home burnt down! Imagine what would have happened if she lost her laptop too. The first thing I did when I looked at our beachfront property to rent was check the Internet line speed.
To run an online business, you need to have the best Internet connection available. The way I attract international clients is by giving value-led video training sessions using live streaming such as Facebook Live. By having your own Facebook group and being seen as a leader you automatically gain authority. Use Instagram and Facebook to show behind the scenes, share where you travel to, what you like and share your unique perspective.
Create a personal brand online, be visible, show up and stand out. They key is to give practical marketing, social media and personal branding advice. Stick to the things that only you can do in your business, like creating content, showing up on video and planning out your bigger picture plan.
The innovation formula is simple: Your ability to innovate and be creative is based on the sum of all of your experiences. Great ideas do not take shape in our minds, they are the result of external stimulus hitting a prepared mind. We connect the dots in new and creative ways. It helps to have an ego, but you must be in service to something bigger if you are to inspire the people you need to help you. So, ask yourself this: What do you have that is so deeply compelling and needed that no one can outsource you or replace you?
Until you can answer this question, keep building your mind, your abilities and your knowledge. Work on your repository, and your ability to connect the dots. Thato Kgatlhanye , founder of the Rethaka foundation , an organisation that creates school bags that are also solar panels, and can provide schoolgoers with energy in the evening so that they can do their homework, says that she is money-driven, business-driven, and empathetic towards her people.
In other words, her business is created through shared value, and the desire to not only create money for her business, but within her communities as well. People are hungry for things that are inclusive and show positive change. Consider Airbnb — the founders had the audacity to put a blow-up mattress in their livingroom, and believe that other people would find value in their offering.
And they were right, mainly because the business model is all inclusive. The business wins, the hosts win and the customers win. In addition, people say they are more likely to purchase from ethical and sustainable businesses. The cynics might say this is what people say, not how they buy. Always be cognisant of how responsive the market is. Learn to leverage public sentiment and get attention through the ideal of shared value. Winning with others is the fastest way to create value today. When we start a project or idea, we try to project into the future.
We want to draw a linear picture between now and then. The problem is that creation is far more chaotic. Instead, minute variations over time create profound changes. There are no defining moments of success or failure; just a series of events strung together over time. To make the necessary minute variations though, you need data points and you need to take action. Often this starts with just beginning. If you start, you can move forward, slowly but surely.
Progress is far more evolutionary than simply trying to imagine the end. The problem is that the mind blocks us. We essentially block ourselves from success. Building anything and trying to be innovative requires a series of many, many decisions made over years and years. Many of those decisions are made — or not made — from a place of fear. Our instincts tell us to do something, and then our minds stop us. The most incredible things can happen if we learn to follow our instincts though. In essence, the space between your instinct and the moment of hesitation that stops you from acting is five seconds.
This means you have five seconds to make things happen, and the way to utilise that time and to make things happen is to count down from five: A countdown suspends — for a moment — the self-doubt that gives you space to move before the brain kills it. I started using the rule for small stuff at first. A countdown in the morning to get out of bed and go to gym. Then I started using it for the harder stuff, like not losing my temper. If you can be aware enough to make the countdown, you can change your behaviour.
The ability to execute and turn innovation into profit comes down to a series of five-second moments over years. Get past your mental blocks and act on your instinct. Combine this with building on your knowledge, connecting the dots around you, and understanding that value is not given or taken, but is created through shared value, and you have the recipe for innovation and success. The super-successful focus heavily on learning new skills, reading practical books and listening or watching podcasts, interviews and informational courses.
All the work is imperfect and all the learning is continuous. Three great places to begin are:. These female entrepreneurs are breaking barriers, transforming industries and inspiring change on the continent. Keep an open mind and trust your instincts This is not the time to judge your abilities or your experience. Buy yourself time Pick a specific time each week when the only thing you do is work on developing your business.
Test out your idea and be willing to adjust it You will be successful if you take action and make adjustments to your idea by analysing the information you receive. Take a stand for yourself If you are dissatisfied with your current circumstances, admit that no one but you can fix them. Identify the right business for you Give yourself permission to explore. There are three common approaches to entrepreneurship: Do what you know. Look at work you have done for others in the past and think about how you could package those skills and offer them as your own services or products.
Do what others do. Learn about other businesses that interest you. Once you have identified a business you like, emulate it. Solve a common problem. Is there a gap in the market? Is there a service or product you would like to bring to market? If you choose to do this, make sure that you become a student and gain knowledge first before you spend any money.
Ask yourself the following questions: What am I building? Who will I serve? What are my objectives, strategies and action plans steps to achieve my goals? Know your target audience Before you spend money, find out if people will actually buy your products or services. Understand your personal finances and choose the right money you need for your business As an entrepreneur, your personal life and business life are interconnected.
Here are some networking basics: When attending networking events, ask others what they do and think about how you can help them. The key is to listen more than tout yourself. No matter what group you join, be generous, help others and make introductions without charging them. When considering your customers or clients, ask yourself: What can I give them?
How can I make them successful in their own pursuits? This approach can help lead you to new ways to hone your product or service and deliver more value, which your customers will appreciate. Get the word out Be willing to say who you are and what you do with conviction and without apology. Overcoming your fears Call it what you like. Make a list Making lists is a common denominator in businesses that have moved forward during the start-up phase. Take baby steps It can be overwhelming when your to-do list is changing and priorities seem to be wrestling each other, but starting with small, manageable jobs can help thwart fears and minimise anxiety.
Be accountable Find a partner, organisation or another business owner to hold you accountable. Predict the future A sure way to determine if you are furthering your business is to look ahead. I have other problems also, besides being gullible — like being allergic to hard work, unless it is something I really enjoy doing. Your Blog Mastermind course is excellent. But that you can get from James Martell, by signing up for his Backlinks Workshop.
The first thing that comes to mind in terms of constraints is time. Having so many projects and ideas of projects and not having time to do everything I want to do on all of them.
The next is priorities — sometimes I wonder what I should do with my time. I have 8 hours to be online — what should I spend those 8 hour on? This project or that one? And when a new eBook or idea falls in my lap, is it okay to stop what I am doing and go look into it? Or should I just go peddle-to-the-metal on this one project I am working on, and damn the torpedoes? When I do have some of 2 and I have a pretty good idea of 2, I have to use 3 to stick to 2. I think that your 2 on the List Maintenance of current systems is one of my biggest.
Thanks for the insight, Jane http: Applying all the information is a huge challenge. That said, I have made huge strides, and am now producing my first information product for this website. Because I am a professional writer and a published author, I am able to see that people need help with their content. To sum it up, the constraint of overwhelm happens during the process of trying to do ALL the things necessary, and keep up with them, while being in a huge learning curve at the same time.
I too have trouble focusing on one project. Too many ideas, too many websites and not enough time! My constraint is a full time job, being married and a little sweet daughter. Sometime I feel bad of not spending enough time with my sweet daughter. And you can not work with her being around. So much to think about is what holds me back, and you most certainly give me that. I have only pinched the millions of blogs to read and what brings me back is content, both in style and the information.
Blog content is worth the time for everybody who is serious. I need to control a downfall before it happens. Thank you for such great content throughout. It is my belief that all things are simpler than what we think. IM has been made so complex by hype, jargon and intimidating gurus. And thank you for being so open about your constraints and serving as an example. No one can ever be a perfect Internet Marketer.
Finding success online takes lots of hard work, dedication and the willingness to learn and grow. Many of us get so wrapped up in the details that we overwhelm ourselves instead of taking things step by step and celebrating our successes along the way.
I know at times I can be too hard on myself — but then I realize — hey I have so much to be grateful for. My biggest contraint is time, but at least that is something I can deal with. With a traditional brick and mortar business money would be the main factor holding me back. Running a online business is a huge time suck for me, there is always so much to do and everthing seems to take longer than I expect.
Plus getting traffic through the search engines takes alot of time and work. You could go with pay per click to get instant traffic, but as you said it is very unforgiving; You need to really leverage paid traffic by selling a product to cover your cost and build a list at the same time. What holds me back? Lack of ability because I am very new to internet marketing, just began in July.
I have been working this very slowly part-time. Your blogging course has opened my eyes to a world of opportunity, but applying the lessons takes some skill, which I have been learning from you. I was looking at the list that you made in this article and I would have to say that I fall in each category a little bit and some more than the others with the exception of the mortgage, which I do not have.
That is a truly superb post. Great post, as always, and would agree with many of the other comments here. However, I can see results now but it does take the commitment as Eva says and time , priority and discipline — as Anna so accurately comments above. So all I would like to ,is that for new folks to be absolutely sure they are really wanting to get into this — as it takes time. If you are stressed in another job then I am sure you will have to dig very deep to make it all happen and to stand a good chance.
Step 1: Traffic
However what I can add as a non techie, is that it took me much longer and load more cash to build a regular site that now has less traffic than my new blog site. New to the blogging game — thus need to get my feet wet fast. Only 3 posts so far — thus need to get down on more content I have tons in my head already! The link is http: Some of you will definitely find it amusing, while some i suppose may think it strange probably.
Just check it out now ya, Thank You! I gotta agree, that first sale it the absolute most vital step to get your online business kicked off. Another important point is to then stay motivated. I had started out before and made my first sale and multiple sales after that, but then lost motivation and have to start from scratch again — it is a lot easier if you keep at it. The concept of making money is so easy just like you said.
But when applying the concept is far more difficult then we thought. The main reason is at the traffic. I think most of the internet marketer face this problem too. Just like you said, many people stop at this point. Something i just losing my motivation to moving on. But no matter what it takes, I will not give up so easily. Most of all blogger are lack of commitment, especially about traffic, anyway do you know why same niche and same technique can be different result of traffic? This is definitely a great read, and something I have noticed as well.
No matter who I am learning about, these three steps are critical. My constraints are probably each one of the steps. Also, focusing on one project until completion, or one site, one product, things like this hold me back.m.mytravelbuddies.dev3.develag.com/53.php
How To Start An Internet Business In 3 Easy Steps (And What Holds You Back)
Yaro, another informative and inspiring post. For me, it is taking time to build the confidence to reach out and establish relationships to grow the network. As I cover the other bases, though, I can see that this next step will become less painful to make. It is a lack of consistent effort and willingness to do whatever it takes to succeed.
Its all right there! Do you need a little brother to follow you around and watch what you do? I just learned that my site needed to be indexed by Google, in order to be recognized on tne web. So, that took me a day to figure out how to do all of that…lol. Finding the appropriate affiliate product to sell 2. Finishing my first ebook and putting it on clickbank 3.
Having made the mistake to have spent 1 year first year building my business on revenues from ads aka traffic instead of finding affiliate products and working on putting out my own content. At least a mentor could point me in the right direction through his knowledge and experience as I am currently wandering all over the place. Right now, i started to put things in order and hopefully by a month or two things will start going somewhere hopefully not down.
Try reading the four hour work week by Tim Ferris and find ways to get time back. I am in the computer consulting business and I feel your pain. I often work hours or more per week. I am making changes that will reduce that by at least half. Without time you have no ability to invest in your dreams. Is there a way to pay for this through PayPal? Hi Ken — send an email to supportATblogmastermind. My biggest constraint is lack of strategy. Is that a good thing or should I just forge ahead regardless…..
I guess what this really means is that there is no end to suckers who will pay for hope. Hey man, great post and wise words as usual. Thank you for the great article. I think that this topic is in-line with my goals as I am seeking the freedom of web marketing, ad revenue and product revenue. I have started officeliveteam. I read the four hour work week by Tim Ferris. He identifies free time as a key element and suggests that you break free from your time sucking activities.
Random surfing, email, endless and useless meetings. This book really helped me create focus, identify my goals and create a vision. Additionally, it helps you to eliminate the fear and doubt that many of us face. So, I have set the vision but I am still looking for creative was to stretch my time. My first order of business is to move from full time to part time in my current position and create the free time required to begin building my online business.
You and I are on the same page there. However, he is absolutely correct about the issues we all face in the absence of time. Lots of great information here, thanks! I know there are a lot of sources of information on the Internet for starting an online business, but few cover them in as in depth a manner as this one.
Most people fail because they are too lazy. There are plenty of ways to get traffic, especially targeted traffic, and most people are too lazy to put in the work to get it. You HAVE to spend money in order to make money. Most people are unwilling to do this. I do hold a day job and it sucks up 10 hours a day if you count the commute. I realize I could hire someone but I lack an idea of what someone would charge, fearing it would be the equivalent of hiring an attorney?

I could go on but yea my limits have been self limiting. I really feel that we are all doing exactly what we should be doing and can realisticly only handle so much at a time. So try to keep doing what you are doing, keep motivated, find inspiration where you can, get your exercise, drink your water, enjoy some tea and smile. This is all great information. It is going to take me a while to process it. It seems that most people are having issues when trying to create a start-up internet business while still trying to work full time.
That seems like the biggest hurdle. Paula — that is my situation: Its only going to get worse during the holiday season! Its taken me longer to read the comments than the article. I also have a lot of half baked ideas floating in my head. Am wondering how to get them to work.: I am just starting out again. I would say my most pressing constraint is money. Having been retired from the U. I had a music blog, which I had monetized, and it was showing up in search results, and I had incorporated a couple of my affiliate programs. The one thing I know I did wrong for sure, was importing all this content from other blogs into mine because I was desperate for content; now I realize that all I did was supply duplicate content, which is a cardinal sin in blogging.
To one of the posts above; it does take time to incorporate adsense into your blog and see results because the revenue per click is usually minimal, so try incorporating your affiliate programs or other products you want to sell into your blog post, articles, free reports, re-written PLR articles with your links in it, just make sure it matches the topic of your blog. I am by no means an expert, but there definitely a step by step process to earning money online, and a blog IS the easiest way to drive traffic and create an online income. More creative than focused.
Not always wiling to delegate. My control issues come up. If I have more than 4 options, my brain freezes. So those are the most pressing constraints for me. Found your site by way of Profit Lance. My biggest constraints are: Full time job 2. Husband that needs to feel loved 3. Grandchildren that visit and demand attention 4. Finances — for advertising PPC scares the heck out of me 5. Boy, this studying is hard work after an 8 hour job.
I refuse to give up. Thank you for a well written blog. There are several things holding me back from offering my blog the time it needs to grow massively, but I think if I can continue to squeeze everything in, in the time I have I will one day achieve something from my blog. Saying that I have created my first ebook which I will be giving away on my blog soon enough, so that should be another step towards my goals. Hiii Yaro… You are always providing good information. N your tips always works. But my question is how much does the blog helps in increasing the business..??? Its the only blog that brings the traffic to the site..
I am new to blog, everyone hope to earn an income by blogging, me either. But I hope my articles inside my blog will bring some enlightenment and joyment to my readers. I cannot begin to tell you how incredibly helpful your website is and the information you provide. I hope to refine the process, and I hope to join the Mastermind program soon to fine-tune my processes.
As someone who is in the process of monetizing his blogs and creating a successful Internet business, I can say that this article hit it right on.
- Empirically Based Play Interventions?

Your observations and suggestions are helping me learn how to A create a site that is useful to my readers, and B drive more traffic which will result in more subscribers and sales. That was a fantastic post. I love your transparency about your own level of success and have no doubt that you will eventually reach the top. For me, to this point, traffic has been the main issue so I continue to plug away using a variety of traffic generating strategies.
Thanks for a wonderful blog, Chris http: Time is probably my biggest constraint. Full time job, shift work, single income family, married with a baby. I work on the blog when everyone else is asleep. The upshot is that it forces me to be organized and focussed when I do get the chance to blog. It forces you to work fast and smart. This article nailed me right on the head Yaro!
I also am my worse enemy. For example, the domain name… iTwitterToo. I have never had my own internet business, and have really wanted to get started for the past year or so. There are so many online businesses advertised on the internet and tv but I never know if any of them are actually legit. I have a full time job in the medical industry but have flexible hours so I can devout time to starting an online business, but desperately need some hands on guidance.
I have a great work ethic and am not looking for any get rich quick scheme. I am willing to put in the time. Search engine optimization sometimes happens quicker than we expect. I know a site which has a list of different guitar sites on the sales page. Obviously, the cheaper one makes more sales. Nonetheless, the higher priced ones might be attractive to a loyal repeat customer. This site uses a blog to provide fresh free new content and the third party company provides a short newsletter with free guitar lessons.
Great advice Yaro, everyone I have shared this information with has been totally over the moon. Adwords is very tough. Some niches have totally dried up. Advertisers are not placing any ads in some niches. Yaro That was a great post. I love the three steps at the begining. I see that myself in so many businesses and I know that with my own business this proccess happening. But I also like how ytou put down the challenges that you have with your business and what things you can do to fix that. Leaves me a good outlook to what we all can do. Thanks for sharing Yaro.
In my opinion, the hardest part of starting an online business is the first time building a website. Everything is easy after that. Yaro is right that most people failed in step 1 which is to generate traffic. People give up too quickly before they even get started. People give up too quickly because they are not getting instant gratification. The idea is to stick with your marketing plan and keep at it until you generate constant traffic which lead to sale and so on.
3 Steps to Starting your Own Business Today
Start slow and focus on getting just one customer at a time. Nice refreshing post Yaro. I love the step-by-step format you have presented it in. My greatest constraint is not falling into distractions. Would you please give my your opinion. I appreciate your time. I also clicked on a couple of ads while I was in there to see what type of products you offer and what they are about.
I have done this because I am new to on-line marketing and web site building and I am trying to get a feel for building my site and what products I should offer. I would welcome and value your opinion if you would go to my site and give me a quick critique of it and let me know if the ad style and placement are good or not. I only have 2 sites and they are both less than 2 weeks old. I hope to hear back from you as to what you think of them. Your time is appreciated.
Your article gave me an idea on how to manage whatever online business i will have. Thank you and looking for more informative articles from you…. When this happens, site owners should consider hiring someone to do it for them. This allows them to focus on revenue generation. This is a great post and the ideas are well thought out. One of the challenges for any business owner is to get out of their own way when the company starts to grow and sales start to increase.
A topic not covered includes automating as much as you can. Yes, you can hire people or outsource some work. But, if you have software and automation tools that can help as well. You can buy individual tools or software that does one thing. Or you can get a total package and take care of everything at once.
Once you get started and follow the advice in this post, automation will help you rev things up even more. As far as gaining traffic to your website, social media marketing can be another major contributor to add to the list. Although it can fall under search engine optimization, the amount of traffic it generates for small businesses is growing at a rapid pace. Of all the hindrances to starting an online business, one of the least recognised are self-defeating beliefs. I could not believe that this article is free to read. I hope I could get a grip and make the right decision. Thanks Yaro for this article.
The hardest part of running an internet business is getting traffic and then converting that traffic. Before you even think about trying to make money you have to build up some good quality content on a particular topic. When I was starting an online business, I need a lot of information, tools, and resources. Well, I think any business requires investment. It was holding me back at first. But I am just thankful that I did invested on something that is useful and rewarding.
One BIG problem I have has to do with reading emails. I find myself spending an enormous amount of time reading and organizing my email. But, with the number of emails I get, it has become stressful and exhausting. I am bombarded daily with so many emails that I can never keep up. But, the truth of the matter is that I HAVE learned a lot, and discovered some really good opportunities through reading my emails. I have to admit that I have yet to find a solution to this problem. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said you need to find time to implement what you are learning.
That should be done first, before you read my emails. The good thing about implementing it will force you to work on the problem you face immediately. Then the only emails you should read are the ones that relate to solving that problem. Everything becomes simpler once you actually have a project up and running because all your focus switches to that.
Take action and clarity will come. A very useful article indeed Yaro! I think my biggest constraint is current inability to implement all the ideas I have.

And coming from a professional background, I must confess that is difficult because I want to be the guy that delivers the excellent service. But I guess part of my journey is to learn to trust others to do this and to focus on the bigger picture. Great resource for someone looking into starting an online business. I agree, traffic is key, so there should be a focus on marketing and outreach to connect with your audience.
There are three major causes of the failures: It initially stems from a lack of skill and experience, but the actual cause is a lack of practice. Yaro This site is really awesome, I suffer from them constraints you mention except for no. I need to motivate myself to a greater degree. The Sales funnel concept is really interesting in that you get a large number of people to buy a low value front end product and then to move a proportion to higher value products in 3 or 4 successive steps.
I was looking to find data for my research and I landed here on your page. Things get better for me now because of your useful information. Thanks a lot sir.
