Some scattered soilage to pages, yet overall tight and generally clean interiors. Der Herr vergisst die Seinen nicht! Children's stories and verses. The writing and watercolors were executed by Mk. Neubold, and he signs the colophon.
Early coloring sets this copy apart. Abundant woodcuts attributed to Josse Amman and Feyerabend. The illustrations depict, of course, jousting tournaments, but also banquets, music-making, courtship and festivities that went along with the tournaments and military marches and activity that were the real impetus for the tournament and its particular culture.
In addition many of the decorative devices and many coat-of-arms are colored. This is an early history of tournaments, and surely the most comprehensive on the topic at the time of its appearance and still a meaty work on the topic, notwithstanding some inaccuracies. As might be expected, the illustrations show everyone in typical mid-sixteenth century attire regardless of actual period. Remarkable about the color is the variety of color employed in the better examples.
While there are places where the colors appear to have been daubed in a looser wash manner, overall the colors were carefully and neatly applied and the result is a far livelier pictorial element than otherwise would have been the case. The color also served the practical objective of bringing out the detail.
There are color pictures in all, generally measuring In addition there are 74 pages with images of coat-of-arms hand-colored. Approximately half of these pages have multiple images on the page. Some coat-of-arms reappear several times.
Finally counted were 26 leaves with hand-colored decoration or decorative devices. There are actually three parts of this book, or perhaps one might think of it as three works bound in one, and the other parts have their own titles. The second title is "Warhafftige Beschreibunge aller kurzweil und Ritterspil. Bound in period pigskin, with intricate stamped ornamentation and a regal figure in the center. The off white patina has considerable soilage darkening very much in keeping with age. Later spine label chipped around edges. Small stamp at base of spine, possibly a library stamp, but this is a rare instance in which the stamp seems fitting and is not the least bit disconcerting.
One of two antique metal clasps has piece broken off. One leaf had largish corner loss and was remedied with new paper and handwritten or manuscript version of the still comparatively small loss of text. There are a few repaired tears.
In general stains and soilage are minor. Collected poems of early Romantic German poet. Contemporary marbled boards binding has some wear and a tear on spine. With 57 illustrations in full colors and in black and white. The Austrian born, later naturalized American Max Reinhardt was one of the great dramaturges of the early to mid-twentieth century. Among his important achievements was the co-founding of the Salzburg Festival with von Hoffsmansthal and Richard Strauss , and he brought an experimental panache to the German language stage as a theater director in Berlin and Vienna and then later to the American stage.
In Vienna his theater school was an important training ground, and after he came to America, he discovered Olivia de Havilland.
The spine of this copy is sunned, and a bookplate is pasted onto the FEP. Otherwise, tight, bright and clean. Some rubbing to leather spine or corners over marble. Spine with five raised bands. Page 1 of Vol 1 has tear and hole by upper edge, with no loss of text or content. Small corner loss on FFEP of same volume.
- German Literature;
- The Hands of Christ.
- The Rose of Jerico - Piano.
- Giraffe Tracks: The Inspiring True Story of an LDS Missionary in Post-Apartheid South Africa.
A few other trivial chips but this described represents the worst. Wear to corners and edges of volumes. Overall a very good copy of the set. Slight sunning to spines. Moderate wear to slipcases. Otherwise, the volumes themselves are fine, and their leather, very handsome indeed. With a dozen "fairy tales", each accompanied with a provocative color plate and black and white illustrations interspersed.
- Memories of Light and Sound.

- W.A.S.P. Squad!

The binding is an abstract explosion of stars, and with its symmetrical geometric scheme, anticipatory of the Art Deco movement that would soon secede or perpetuate the artistic movement known as Secession. The original pictorial wraps are bound in. Discreet repair to lower spine.
Tight and clean inside. Some soiling of boards. Extra leaves appear to be from Steiner edition.
