JavaScript: Visual QuickStart Guide

I just got it a few day ago. I have to say that I love the condition of the book. It is well taken care of and the shipping process didn't ruin it. I have read some reviews here where people are expressing that the book is not good or hard to follow. I'll give my update after I read it but for those that are wondering if the book comes in a bad shape because of the price, I have attached some photos to show how mine arrived.

Negrino & Smith, JavaScript : Visual QuickStart Guide | Pearson

I would say is worth it so far. I hope this help. One person found this helpful. This book is easy to read and follow and it gives a very general overview of JavaScript, but I would not recommend it to professors for a textbook. The words in the pages are lined in columns and they don't use the whole page which made it very awkward to read and follow. When an example is used, there are detailed description either before or after the example that explains it. There are no other external sources provided for extra information and the information provided was very vague.

For me as a beginner never having touched JavaScript I was looking for a much more inclusive textbook that helped me follow along the examples and more challenging tasks. Other students liked the book, but it didn't do it for me. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful.

Bestselling Series

Let me start by saying that I did learn a few things from this book. That said, I am completely new to Javascript and programming. I found this book to be poorly done throughout.

See a Problem?

The information presented is often not explained clearly, and the examples are not well done. I had to use this for a college class and by the end, even my professor was unhappy with the book. When the code is being "explained", it is often unclear exactly what the author is referring to, and in some cases there is no explanation beyond a line or two. The authors present new Javascript functions inside the code itself, without giving the reader any idea about how they are supposed to work I spent a good deal of my time researching how individual functions were supposed to work so I could follow along.

I could see this being an ok purchase for someone with an intermediate skill in Javascript, or maybe someone coming from another language where you have a better understanding of commonly used functions.

JavaScript: Visual QuickStart Guide: Working with Images

If you are completely new to programming, or Javascript, or if you want a good book on Javascript, I would look elsewhere. This book provides a good introduction to basic programming concepts in Javascript. What I didn't like about it was how different programming techniques were really "mashed together" in each example. I would have preferred a little more detail and explanation on how to use each technique especially core concepts.

What the book did was cover each technique pretty quickly and broadly without getting into much detail about it, then combining all of the techniques for each example. I made a short pit-stop along the way with jQuery and got so frustrated with the lack of support with that library that I was determined to get to know JavaScript better. I buy nearly all of my computer books on Amazon, but I sample them before purchasing in an actual bookstore. Reviews and recommendations do not help me when purchasing a computer book I need to read through it, see if there is an answer to a specific problem I'm looking to solve and if the book 'feels right' then I take a note and buy it on Amazon unless I'm in need of immediate gratification.

This book is likely better suited for someone with more base knowledge of JavaScript than I, but I know that as I learn, this book will become more of an asset to me. I thought PHP was confusing at first, but JavaScript makes it look like a cake walk in comparison as far as I'm concerned. I'm hoping this book will help me tackle the elusive, 'A-HA! There is something about the author's style that makes this book very enjoyable. I am keen to learn, and this book takes me through the process gently and carefully.
